Determining the mass of Cygnus X-1 from its X-ray spectrum involves two parts, measuring its binary period, and measuring its radial velocity. Both of these quantities can be measured using X-ray spectra of Cygnus X-1. In addition, some assumtions will have to be made about the inclination of the system.
