Lifetime: July 1973

Country (primary): United States

Primary Science

Skylab was NASA's first space station and over its lifetime carried out a plethora of scientific and engineering experiments.

High Energy Science

Several experiments that were aboard Skylab One experiment on Skylab, in particular, made observations of cosmic X-rays. The experiment was called S150 or the Soft X-ray Sky Survey.

Science Highlights

  • Observation of the X-ray background which strongly suggested that the background could not be solely explained by the cumulative effects of unresolved X-ray sources
