The ASCA satellite carried two Solid-state Imaging Spectrometers (SIS). Each detector contained four 420 by 422 pixel CCD chips. The SIS detectors were the first time CCDs were used on a satellite for X-ray astronomy; although, now X-ray CCDs are common for astronomy.
The SIS detectors observed X-rays in the range of 0.4 to 10 keV.
